Harold Shapiro, of Guilford CT, a photographer and teacher well-known for his portraiture and night photography, has two lifelong passions: photography and music. In his new body of work, Luminous Instruments, Shapiro plays with light and long exposures to infuse the images of a large range of musical instruments with dynamism. This award-winning new work, which he considers the culmination of his career, will be on exhibit at New England School of the Arts.
“Luminous Instruments” was recently awarded The Bitsie Clark Fund for Artists Grant. At the award ceremony, Clark said: “In these extraordinary black and white photos of musical instruments, Harold’s mastery of both the technical and creative aspects of his craft allow him to produce images that evoke movement and music. The grant will enable Harold to share his breathtaking imagery with our community and ultimately with others around the country.”
“I was inspired to create this new portfolio while playing in a theatrical orchestra,” said Shapiro. “As I observed my beautiful woodwind instruments under the theater lights, I was mesmerized by the intricate shapes of the keys. They cried out to me to capture their elegance and strength and tell their story through photography.”
